"The Important Things in Life"
by Emily Llewellyn
I hate the swirling storm inside of me
Confused emotions like black clouds covering my backyard
Trying to make sense of it.
It came from my conflicted mind.
Cheered by a holiday
But saddened by the knowledge that my family
Has gotten smaller, I fall asleep.
In a dream, I think to myself,
What is important?
Not Iphones or Playstations.
No, no
Of course not
What I mean is
Things you hold dear
Like friends
Teachers
Everything important to you
Then I wake up, thinking about her all over again
Realizing that the more you lose, the more grateful you are.
The storm hasn’t gotten any better
But now, I can see its eye.
Confused emotions like black clouds covering my backyard
Trying to make sense of it.
It came from my conflicted mind.
Cheered by a holiday
But saddened by the knowledge that my family
Has gotten smaller, I fall asleep.
In a dream, I think to myself,
What is important?
Not Iphones or Playstations.
No, no
Of course not
What I mean is
Things you hold dear
Like friends
Teachers
Everything important to you
Then I wake up, thinking about her all over again
Realizing that the more you lose, the more grateful you are.
The storm hasn’t gotten any better
But now, I can see its eye.
