"Iwo Jima"
by Patrick Dougherty
50 miles out, 20 ships start the journey toward Iwo Jima. Hardly any clouds in the sky, the sun shining down guiding the soldiers. Now 2 minutes out the soldiers get ready for their battle. The waves smashing against the side of the boat are ignored by the soldiers. Their captain was screaming out a pep talk. Feeling of the boats hitting the sand, signals the driver to drop the door. Sand splashes up towards the troops like an explosion as the doors of the boats drop. Hundreds of American troops storm the beach. Shots coming from every direction while the troops fight for cover.
Diving on the hot sand in no cover, bullets fly too close to soldiers. Hiding in trenches firing back and forth, seeing their partners being shot, the Americans push back the Japanese, slowly but effectivly. POW POW you can't escape the sound of the gunshots. Rushing up the hill, the Americans find themselves in another long, hard battle. One that will be painful, sad, and bloody. They know that they can't lose this battle, so they fight through the pain in the rough terrain.
Bombs flying left and right, explosions making cover for their advance. The commander screams, “Raise the flag!” Four brave Americans drop their weapons, and sprint to the highest point to raise the American flag. Pushing each other further and further, their courage protects them. Bullets whizzing by the exhausted troops. Feeling their brother’s warm breath on their neck motivates them to be brave, and raise the flag in a very dangerous environment.
Securing the flag sparked a huge cheer in the soldiers which resulted in a rush. Gripping their guns, hundreds of American soldiers flying towards the Japanese. The flag stands tall, almost mocking the Japanese. The bullets hit the flag but still it stays strong. As they are running, they can smell the gunpowder from all of the gun’s firing. The faces of the Japanese turn to fear and retreat. American soldiers chasing the enemy and firing at the same time. The Japanese run into their tunnels.
American troops throw huge bombs into their trenches. Huge explosions blow up the ground killing many Japanese soldiers. Tasting the dirt splashing into their mouths as the explosions blow left and right. When the americans thought there were no more Japanese soldiers left, another wave came out of the trenches with grenades. Americans open fire, wiping out even more of the Japanese. The smell of dead body's make some soldiers sick to their stomach.
The Americans were as tired as a puppy after a walk. The commander says, “at ease men”. This means they can sit down. After all the sliding to safety, shooting enemies and the sights they saw, they needed a rest. All soldiers were watchdogs, and ready to strike.
Right when they thought another attack was coming, the Japanese army came out of a tunnel and threw in the towel. Waving the white flag is their surrender. Trying to speak english the Japanese say, “Surenda, surenda!” They looked as scared as kids on Halloween. All of the American soldiers were making the Japanese soldiers kneel down, and not move. The battle was won. Fighting through the sweat and blood was all worth it for winning this battle.
Packing up all of their belongings, they board the boats, this time they are going home. Another company of American soldiers came to the island to hold it. Iwo Jima is now American territory which will help win the war. Every battle helps win a war.
Soon enough the war will be over but never forgotten. The soldiers will never be the same after what they have gone through. Seeing their friends die right next to them so that they can live in freedom. Taking their lives for their brothers in war. All contributing to the freedom of America
