Post-Thanksgiving Waffles
By Lucy Shea
Every year, I visit Virginia for Thanksgiving to see my grandparents. Thanksgiving is always fun, but one of my favorite family traditions happens afterwards. We make what I call Post-Thanksgiving Waffles. On Black Friday, my dad’s side of our extended family get together and make waffles. We have a special Belgian waffle recipe that my uncle’s parents used to make. But, two years ago, they moved away. Now, my aunt, uncle, sister and I make them in the morning, and invite family-friends over to eat them.
They are simply delicious. The way the homemade whipped cream melts onto them is so satisfying. The strawberries pair perfectly with their semi-sweetness. The maple syrup sinks into the waffles, sweetening them perfectly. Post-Thanksgiving Waffles is my family’s most unique tradition, and one of my favorites. I love it because it’s so much fun to do something that special with people I barely ever see, and it is a part of my family’s culture. I’m so thankful that I get to be a part of this tradition.
