The Expectations
Lorelei stared at herself in the mirror, worrying about what would happen today. She was scared to stand up to the populars. They told her she was stupid and ugly. Most of all, though, they told her she was untalented. These comments hurt, and there was only one way to escape them.
The only place Lorelei felt safe and at home was in the dance studio she had grown up in. Dance was her passion. It helped her find meaning in life. She loved to dance and had mastered the trickier aspects. Her best friends were there, and she explained her situation to them one night.
“Stand up to them!” Julia said.
“Yeah, they don’t control your life or you!” Lydia agreed.
Bernadette laid her hand on Lorelei and said warmly, “You are amazing, okay? Show them how talented you truly are.”
“Thanks, guys.” Lorelei responded.
“Come on, honey, let's make an attack plan.” Kaialana pulled Lorelei to the office where the teachers were to discuss her idea.
The next day was, coincidentally, Athletic Recognition Day. The school usually took the best player from each sport and gave them a little plaque after they demonstrated their skill. Lorelei tied her pointe shoes and waited with bated breath.
The principal said, “Now that the traditional sports are done, we have something special for you this year. We are recognizing a girl who has been bullied and still managed to rise above it. I give you, Lorelei Jones!”
Lorelei stepped onto the stage to ground-shaking applause. She bowed and then started to dance, flowing seamlessly through the moves she had worked on with her teachers the night before. She finished strong. The crowd went crazy, complete with whistles, screams, and even a standing ovation! Lorelei´s cheeks were flushed with excitement and heat, and her heart raced. Lorelei finally realized that now, she was free of the expectations.
It doesn't matter what you do as long as you love it.
