Letter to State Representative
by Olivia Fabian
Dear State Representative Alex Charlton,
Good evening. I am an 8th-grade student at E.T. Richardson in Springfield, Pennsylvania. In social studies, we are learning about the Electoral College and what it does. As you know, the Electoral College is the system in which we elect the president of the United States of America. However, many people are against the Electoral College. They believe the president should be elected by a national popular vote (NPV). I am writing to you to ask you to have Pennsylvania not join the national popular vote compact.
Many people believe the Electoral College is unfair and feel like their votes don’t count. However, The NPV would leave out many Americans because the number of electors each state has is its number of members of congress (Ross). This means that presidential candidates would only focus on the larger states with more electoral votes. Compared to California, Pennsylvania is small, so California would be getting a great deal of attention from candidates and Pennsylvania would get nothing. For the past eight years, our country has been run by Democrats. Our country has been voting more democratic than republican (Jones). This means that the U.S is more democratic than republican. If we start to elect our president by an NPV, a republican would most likely never gain office again. Our founders had no intention of creating a pure majority-rule democracy. Pure democracies do not work (Simonson).
To conclude, I ask you to vote against the NPV. If Pennsylvania joins the compact, not only the state will be in danger, the whole country will be. Please reject the National Popular Vote Compact. Thank you for taking the time consider my request
Sincerely,
Olivia Fabian
