Letter to State Representative
by Nina Phillips
Dear Alex Charlton,
My name is Nina Phillips. I’m in 8th grade and attend E.T. Richardson Middle School. In my social studies class, we are learning about the Electoral College and the National Popular Interstate Compact. I believe that Pennsylvania should join the NPV Interstate Compact.
Pennsylvania needs to sign onto the NPV Interstate Compact.“The most recent election has demonstrated once again, the weaknesses of the electoral college” (How to Abolish the Electoral College). For many elections the winner has not actually won. It's unfair and America needs to do something about it. “...The option that fixes our problems with the current electoral system.”(National Popular Vote Explained) There are many flaws in our modern system. The Electoral College is complicated and unfavourable. There is a lot of controversy in our nation. This is a compromise that will not cause as many arguments and fights. “If you're a democrat in Oklahoma you probably don't come out to vote.” This proves the NPV Interstate Compact is unfair to the citizens that are democratic because Oklahoma is a republican state. Many people feel as if their vote doesn’t count. Everybody's voice matters and everybody's vote should count.
I believe that Pennsylvania should join the NPV Interstate Compact. Although I think that the popular vote is the way to go, if everyone can’t agree on one thing, the NPV Interstate Compact is a good way to meet in the middle. Everyone has an opinion on whether or not the Electoral College is useful. Everyone's opinion matters and should be honoured, so this is a great compromise.
Sincerely,
Nina Phillips
