The DIYist-Room decor
Hello everybody! I spent a long time simplifying and clarifying the best room decor DIY’s on the internet. Feel free to print this and enjoy!!
1) This is a bed canopy, great for a classy approach to the problem of your boring bed. It is a little advanced, but it turns out great! However, you might want to enlist the help of an experienced sewer. You will also need the permission of a parent before starting this. If something goes wrong, or I wasn’t clear enough, the link is: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/get-lakens-look-diy-dorm-bed-canopy-project-193917
You will need:
Sewing machine
Scissors
Large needle
A large 24-inch diameter embroidery hoop
Two curtain panels
Thread to match the trimming
Fishing line
Command hook
Enough trim to run down the lengths of BOTH panels (the length of one curtain side x2)(For those who don’t know, trim is strips of fabric with a decorative element on one side)
Beginning at the top of the curtain, position your chosen trim on the LEFT edge of one panel so that the tassels(or whatever trim you chose)hangs off the edge. Pin it in place. Continue pinning down the trim in the same way until you reach the end of the curtain. Cut any extra trim off, and if it unravels easily, place a piece of tape on the end. Do the same on the other panel, but on the RIGHT side.
Thread your sewing machine with your chosen color(use Google if you don’t know how), then sew down the middle of the pinned trim until you reach the bottom. Secure the ends by raising the needle, pivoting the fabric, then sewing horizontally back and forth over the bottom of the trim a couple of times. Repeat this with your next panel.
Remove all of the hardware from your embroidery hoop, and put the inside hoop away. You won’t need it for this. Then, slide the curtains onto the hoop, trim first, so that the unsewn sides face out and the tassels(or your chosen trim) face toward each other. Then, simply close the hoop.
Thread your needle with the fishing line, knot the end, and stick it through the fabric. Space the next two evenly across the hoop. Secure the Command hook to the ceiling over the bed, and hang the canopy from the fishing line. You are done!
2) This next DIY is a lovely pillow for all you ombre lovers out there. It is a simpler one than the one above. This one is for teal, but if you get more colors, it should work.
You will need:
A white pillow cover
A pillow insert/a pillow without a case that fits
Teal(or whichever color you choose)liquid fabric dye
Plastic spoon
Latex gloves
Paper towels
Trash bag
Lay down a trash bag on your workspace, and put one the latex gloves. Fold the pillowcase in half, vertically.(Hot dog style). Fill the plastic bin with warm water. Add a spoonful of the dye to the water and mix very thoroughly. Then, dip the folded pillowcase in the bin, about ⅓ of the way. Let it soak until the lightest color that you want shows up. Remove the case from the dye and set it aside.
Then, add a few more spoonfuls of dye to the mixture. Dip the pillowcase into the new mixture slightly lower than before. Repeat this, making darker dye for smaller sections of pillow. When you are done and happy with your ombre, unfold the case and set it to dry overnight. The next day, put the pillow in the case and voila! A beautiful addition to your room.
3) This is a hanging notepad. Perfect for a reminder list above your bed, or a to-do list next to your back door. You will need a parent’s permission and help, though.
You will need:
A long, mostly straight branch, pipe, or dowel
Two leather strips that are at least 40” long
A thin leather cord
12” to 24” roll of paper, center hole at least 2” diameter
Hammer
1” nails
Two clothespins
Optional spray paint for the clothespins
Ikea ceramic pot
A level
A friend
First, decide how long you want it to hang. If the strips are 40”, it will hang down about 20”. (You fold them in half) Determine the height you want your roll of paper to be at. Fold the first leather strip in half to form a loop, and hold the bottom of the loop at the height you want the roll of paper to be. Pinch the ends of the strip together directly over one another and hammer a nail through the ends where they meet into the wall. Slip your roll of paper onto the branch(or pipe or dowel), then slip the branch into the first loop on the wall. Fold the second strip in half, too, and slide the other end of the branch into it. Use either a friend or a level(or maybe both) to determine where the second strip must be on the wall so that the branch and paper are even. While holding the branch at a level height, hammer a nail into the folded strip at the exact height of the other nail. (This is where a second or third person is really useful). Now, you can cut any excess leather above the nail so that the ends are even with each other, and the branch is level with the floor.
Next, take the thin leather cord and fold it in half. Tuck the center fold through the hole in your hanging pot. Pull the ends around and through the loop to secure the cord around the pot. Wrap the leather cord behind and over the branch, then knot the ends together behind the leather. Bring the ends to the front and knot again. Snip off excess cord. Use the clothespins to pin the roll of paper on both ends; this will weight the paper down so it doesn’t roll up, and will keep it tidy.
Stay crafty, friends!
